    Kidou Extensions

    1. Do a kidou and its extension together count as one spell for the purpose of spells cast per turn?

    2. Do a kidou and its extension together count as one spell for the purpose of Kenkyouka?

The main reason I say no is because if you look at extensions, the original spell needs to be cast in order to activate. Additionally they require extra power, incantation, and sometimes a gesture.

They can count as one spell in a turn because you, as the writer, choose when the extension goes off. Typically its at the end of the casting of the spell in the first turn, or immediately at the beginning of the following turn. In the writing it's seen as the extension is initiated before a spell resolves.

Kidou extensions are not counted against spells per turn. Even if the extension is activated on a second or third turn of a spell it doesn't count toward spells cast that turn.

As for Kenkyouka, I would disagree with Zack's reasoning but concur with his assessment that since an extension requires the spell to be already activated you can't prime your attack with it. As for the somatic components, I'd argue that Kenkyouka alredy bypasses somatic components for spells, so that rationale doesn't seem compelling to me.

/hops in as the person who approved this and mentioned it to Sene/

It'll work like any other spell + extension. You prime up the base spell on sword and then if it hits/extension's requirements are met, you can follow-up per usual (but you can't use your sword when if spell specifically mentions a certain way to cast it). Doesn't really make sense on most of the extensions to automatically add it to the priming.

Uh-oh... so Kenkyouka can't be used on any spell that has handwaving/pointing/whatever in it, like Beniikazuchi, Reitouten, Saju Sabaku?

You can use it with that spell but as I've confirmed with the GMs, the spell wouldn't originate around your sword. So for example if you used Breaking Palm, the spell would go off like normal, but it'd show up around your sword-hand. The spells originate where the kidou says they do. Making your sword ice and what not with kidou is what Will's kai does.

Hm. So the spell originates at the sword hand, and still works if the sword hand is holding onto the sword instead of making assorted gestures?
